Early game, you're serial: one upgrade finishes before the next starts. As CEO level rises, you unlock more slots — engineering can level while sales catches up.
Real startup parallel: founders who can fund two workstreams without dropping both balls move faster. CEO HQ is that capacity in game form.
It also anchors company-wide morale. Neglect the desk and the whole org feels sluggish even when individual departments look fine.
Engineering — Product & Speed
Engineering is the default first bet in most runs — and for good reason.
Upgrades here improve product quality and chip away at tech debt. Better product feeds customer acquisition and long-term valuation. Lower debt means fewer surprise fires later when you're trying to sprint or research.
This is your "ship the thing" department. Founders who skip engineering early often look rich on paper until quality catches up with them on the leaderboard.
Sales — Customers & Unit Economics
Sales turns product into paying customers. Without it, you're building in a vacuum.
Sales upgrades improve acquisition efficiency and profitability per customer — the bridge between "we have a product" and "we have MRR."
Many onboarding paths push you toward Sales L1 before Marketing or Security unlock fully. That's intentional: traction before polish, traction before walls.
Marketing — Brand & Revenue Multipliers
Marketing is the amplifier. Brand awareness and revenue bonuses stack on top of what Sales and Engineering already built.
It typically opens after you have a few customers — you can't market a product nobody uses. Marketing-heavy founders win leaderboard sprints; engineering-heavy founders win late-game valuation. The best runs balance both.
Security — The Defensive Lane
Security is the only department whose primary job is protecting what you built when rivals get aggressive.
Upgrades improve defense score and customer loyalty — how hard you are to hit with Disrupt and how likely customers stay after an attack.
You don't need Security on day one. You need it before your server gets tense. We go deep on that role in The Only Defensive Department.
R&D Lab — Permanent Power
R&D Lab gates the research tree — permanent bonuses, not sprint buffs.
Engineering makes this week's product better. R&D makes every future week stronger. Upgrades here accelerate how fast research completes and how much long-term growth compounds.
Tutorial pushes you through Engineering → R&D early for a reason: once research is online, your decisions shift from "survive" to "specialize."
Consultants — Rent, Don't Buy
Consultants aren't a seventh building on the map — they're temporary hires from the department screen.
Rent a growth coach or ops advisor for a fixed window. Morale bumps, parallel slot boosts, short-term fixes. They don't replace leveling a department; they buy time when the server clock is unforgiving.
Think of them as the startup equivalent of a fractional exec — useful, expensive, not a substitute for org design.
