Disrupt Explained: How PvP Works in a Startup Simulator

Disrupt Is the Server Waking Up

For your first sessions, Unicorn Rivals feels like building in peace: upgrades, research, sprint, cash.

Then you open Rivals and realize forty founders share one economy. Someone can spend resources to Disrupt your company — a targeted attack that shakes customers, cash, or brand momentum.

This isn't army combat on a map. It's startup sabotage: you feel it in your next routine cycle, your leaderboard rank, and whether your evening session was productive or defensive.

If you already leveled Security, you know the defensive answer. This post is the full offensive and defensive loop — what Disrupt is, how scout works, and why successful hits don't play like traditional PvP theft.


The Disrupt Loop in Four Steps

Every attack follows the same arc:

We don't publish exact success formulas or timer lengths in public posts. The feel is what matters: Disrupt is costly, risky, and never free — you trade runway for rank pressure.


Scout First or Attack Blind?

Scouting answers: Is this target worth the spend?

You see enough to decide — defense posture, recent momentum, whether they're shielded. Skip scout and you're gambling on a name from the leaderboard.

Spy kits (covered in a later post) push intel further. The design goal is informed aggression, not random bullying.

Real startup parallel: you don't sue a competitor without reading their filings. Disrupt models the same discipline in a two-minute mobile action.


What Happens When a Disrupt Lands?

A successful hit applies temporary damage — customer wobble, cash pinch, brand dent — not permanent deletion of your company.

Key design choices:

  • No resource theft — rivals don't empty your treasury and walk away with your MRR. Damage is a setback, not acquisition.
  • Recovery exists — loyalty, Security research, and time soften the blow. Bad hits hurt; they don't end runs.
  • Public log — the server remembers who attacked whom. Reputation matters on a persistent world.

That's why Disrupt pairs with Security upgrades: defense rating and disrupt defense research turn expensive attacks into bad ROI for the attacker.


Offense: When Disrupt Makes Sense

Disrupt isn't for day-one onboarding. It's mid-season punctuation when:

  • You're chasing rank and the leader is barely ahead
  • A rival keeps undercutting your market share
  • You need to slow someone, not out-build them this week

Offense spends the same five resources you use for growth. Every attack is a tradeoff: cash into sabotage instead of Engineering L8.

After finishing Revenue research, you might afford more attacks. After ignoring Security, you become the cheapest target on the board.


Defense: You Don't Have to Play Aggressor

Many strong founders play boring to attack:

  • Security levels that absorb impact
  • Loyalty that recovers customers after a hit
  • Cooldown awareness — knowing when you're vulnerable

Disrupt is multiplayer tension, not a requirement to play villain. Ignoring Rivals entirely is a strategy — until someone notices you're soft.


Fair Play by Design

Disrupt includes guardrails (cooldowns, shields for new players, caps on how often one rival can farm you). The intent is server drama, not harassment simulator.

We tune for:

  • Leaders feel pressure, not siege
  • New founders get a protected early window
  • Repeat bullying costs the attacker opportunity elsewhere

Exact numbers stay in beta — the philosophy is on the blog; the balance lives in the server.

Your First Disrupt Season

Practical order:

  1. Learn the core loop (evening session) before Rivals obsession
  2. Scout once before your first attack — see the intel screen
  3. Level Security when you're top twenty and visible
  4. Treat Disrupt as a seasonal tool, not your only win condition
